How To Update Your Staircase On a Budget

Refurbishing your staircase to match the existing decor of your home can really turn your house into a ‘Home’. There are many ideas that are simple, affordable and effective, that you can implement without breaking the bank as the cost of living continues to rise.

1. Add A Splash of Paint

If you’re staircase is structurally  sound and you are happy with its exsisting components then a coat of fresh paint can transform it.

Whether you add neutral colours to compliment your existing walls and furniture for a homely feel, or add a vibrant colour to express your individuality, this is a cost effective idea.

Rather than painting the whole staircase in the same colour why not try painting different components in contrasting colours, your treads and spindles, for example, to bring out your individual personality.

How about creating your own runner with paint adding a sophisticated element without the added carpet.  Choose your colour and paint down the middle of your stairs, using good quality masking tape to ensure straight edges. This budget effective, stylish addition to your staircase will lift the design of your entrance way in no time.

2. Cover with carpet

If your carpet is looking worn or the natural wood finish is beginning to show its age consider replacing the carpet.  It can help add and keep warmth in your home. This is worth considering if you are still holding off turning on your heating to save on utility bills.

Carpet is still a popular and cosy choice for staircases. It reduces the noise on the staircase and avoids listening to the footsteps of children who are invariably up and down them at the most unsociable hours!

If you don’t want to cover your natural wooden treads then consider a carpet runner down the middle of the stairs. The contrast of natural wood and carefully chosen runner can look very stylish indeed and is often cheaper than a fully carpeted solution.

3. Replace Just The Spindles.

Exchanging your spindles for a different style can be a cost-effective way to give the look of a new staircase without the expense or mess! There are an almost endless choice of styles and designs.

If you are looking for modern designs, exchanging your traditional wooden spindles for metal spindles may be a good choice. It suggests an  industrial, yet minimalistic decor, and perfect for contemporising any staircase.

Another way to upgrade your spindles is by replacing them with glass balusters. They open up even the smallest of spaces, allowing the light to flow freely, making it feel larger and brighter. Always an elegant finish.

3. Use Tiling!

Once reserved for Victorian style homes tiling can add a real talking point.

Try tiling just the risers with an eye catching, bold pattern. Alternatively what about a high gloss monochrome finish.
